Significant Web Outage Affects Dozens Sites and Mobile Apps

An extensive internet failure has affected many websites and apps worldwide, with users noting issues getting online after problems at the online infrastructure system.

The disrupted platforms comprise the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-operated operations such as its main retail website and the Ring doorbell home security firm.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was impacted in addition to its branches the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, with additional accounts of issues reaching the HMRC online portal on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring device owners used online platforms to report their security devices were not working.

In the UK alone, reports of disruptions on specific platforms ran into the thousands for each app.

The company stated that the issue started in the east coast of the US at the cloud division, a division that offers crucial internet framework for many companies, who utilize space on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the world’s largest web hosting platform.

Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “increased problem frequencies and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the eastern US of the America. The ripple effect appeared to affect services worldwide, and the problem monitoring service reporting issues with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, further indicated a surge in problems on the start of the week, with many of them found in the Virginia area, the site of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the issues originated.
