Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Condemns Labor Union Chief for ‘Trump Courtesan’ Statement

Giorgia Meloni has sharply criticized the leader of the major Italian trade union after the official labeled her as a “courtesan” of ex-President Donald Trump.

Background of the Disputed Remarks

CGIL leader Maurizio Landini, leading the CGIL union, made the statement in a televised interview this Tuesday. This followed international leaders, Meloni among them, participated in a peace conference for the Middle East held in Egypt.

The union leader accused Meloni of “not having lifted a finger” to secure peace in Gaza, saying her role was confined to “playing Trump’s courtesan”. “Fortunately, Italian people demonstrated to protect the honor and dignity of the nation,” he said.

Meloni’s Response

Via an online post on Thursday, the Prime Minister remarked that Landini was obviously obscured by increasing animosity (which is understandable)”. She proceeded to post a meaning of the term “courtesan”.

“I think everyone knows the primary definition associated with this term, but, for the benefit of anyone unfamiliar, I have posted the first definition obtained from a brief online search,” Meloni said, providing a image that read: “Promiscuous woman, straight; euphemism, sex worker.”

Meloni also criticized her left-leaning critics, saying that over many years they had preached to us on gender equality” only to then attack a female leader by “referring to her as a prostitute”.

Union Leader’s Explanation

Reacting to the post, the union leader maintained that there were “no sexist insults” against the Prime Minister and that the term was meant to imply “Trump’s lackey”.

Via a released message, he explained: “During a brief interview, which anyone can easily rewatch, to prevent misinterpretation or misuse of the expression, I promptly explained what I meant – that the Prime Minister was on the coat tails of Trump, she attended Trump’s court, she served as Trump’s underling.”

Meloni’s Relations with Trump

Meloni has steadily built cordial connections with the American leader. In a public address at the Egypt summit, the US President faced Meloni – the sole female in attendance – and called her “beautiful”. “Across America, this could be the end of your political career,” he remarked. “However, I will risk it. Is it alright if I state you are beautiful? As you are indeed beautiful.”

Trump later praised her as “motivational to all” in concerning the English edition of her work, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which contains a foreword by Donald Trump Jr..

Earlier Controversies

During the summer, the Prime Minister responded firmly after discovering that doctored photos of Meloni and other prominent Italian women had been posted on a pornographic website, stating she felt revulsion, and offering “empathy and assistance to all the women who have been insulted, offended, and abused”.
